A Lumber Village on the Railroad

Spray Foam Insulation in Wolverine works with homes in a village that grew fast on the railroad. Jacob Shook and his family settled the area as early as 1874. George Richards, who traveled to Gaylord about 20 miles south for mail and supplies, asked for a closer post office, which opened as Wolverine on January 3, 1881. That year the community had 18 residents; by 1891, with the railroad and lumbering, it had about 1,000. It incorporated as a village in 1903.

Older housing

Homes from the lumber and railroad years were built simply, on basements or crawl spaces, with little insulation. Today Wolverine is much smaller, with 309 residents in the 2020 census, and many homes are older. Rim joist foam, attic sealing and depth, and crawl space work fit them well.

Cabins nearby

The area around Wolverine has cabins and seasonal homes in the woods and along rivers. Cabins used in winter need floors or crawl spaces sealed and insulated, and ceilings brought up to depth.

Climate

Cheboygan County is in Climate Zone 6A on OpenEI's list, the same as Otsego County. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic and R-30 for floors over unheated space.

Wolverine is a short drive north of Gaylord on the old US 27 corridor, and we cover it on regular trips.

Rivers and moisture

Homes near the river and on low ground tend to have damper basements and crawl spaces. We check for water and spring melt problems before sealing anything, and include drainage in the plan if needed.
