A Lumber Town on the Au Sable

Spray Foam Insulation in Grayling serves the only incorporated community in Crawford County. Grayling grew in the lumber era because of its access to the Au Sable and Manistee rivers and the forest around it; logs were floated downriver to the lakes. The town was platted by the railroad as Crawford and renamed for the grayling fish once abundant in the Au Sable. It was founded in 1872.

Housing

The 2020 census counted 1,867 residents and 891 housing units in Grayling, 14.1% vacant. Homes in town are often older, on basements or crawl spaces. Around the city, river cabins and seasonal homes line the Au Sable and the nearby lakes.

River cabins

Cabins along the Au Sable were often built for summer fishing and canoe trips. Using one in winter means sealing the floor or crawl space, insulating the ceiling and protecting the plumbing. Closed-cell foam on crawl walls and under vaulted ceilings is common.

Crossroads location

Grayling sits at the junction of I-75, US 127, M-72 and M-93, in the middle of northern Michigan. It is a straight run down I-75 from Gaylord and a regular stop for us.

Fishing and canoe country

Grayling has hosted the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon every July since 1947, and many cabins near the river are used by visitors in summer. Owners who want to use them in fall and winter usually start with the floor and the ceiling.
